Xbox.com :: Xbox Live

Xbox.com :: Xbox Live

Was dubious how good this would be, but Tom wanted it for xmas and its not bad. Easy to set up with the Netgear modem/router and ADSL from plus.net. Just run in an ethernet cable, plug both ends in, register and your away.
Got a good little ethernet cable kit from Maplins - 50m cable a handfull of of end connectors and a crimp tool for £24.99 - couldn't find it in the online cataloge which is really crap by the way but spotted it in the shop - despite phoning up and asking - whoever answered the phone didn't seem to know what they'd got! Maplin's now seem to be employing the same standard of shop assistants at GAME and Dixons ie Morons who don't know anything and don't care that they don't either.
Good shop assistants have been found in the following places:
Evans (while waiting for Jan the guy was most helpful telling me which bookshop I could find a particular book)
Woolies where they will put stuff away for a couple of days if they have it in stock also phone you if out of stock stuff comes in - which is nice!
Boots the Chemist some branches at least - Sale is good, as is Regent Road, but Trafford centre not quite as good, not really bad tho just not quite 5*
and good online service at Powerkiteshop (next day delivery - free - and no quibble return/exchange) and Highwaymen (next day delivery)
also Ebuyer (not to be confused with ebay) has also come back into my good books although this was a 'delivered direct from supplier' item which may have speeded things back up !

BBC NEWS | UK | Cold kills 'thousands' in a week

BBC NEWS | UK | Cold kills 'thousands' in a week

Why does this still happen in this country? Why are our so called public utilities cutting off anyone's gas or electric at this time of year - especially without finding out the background situation and adding insult to injury, following the example of our boys in blue by hiding their incompetence behind the data protection act. Maybve if we all just took a minute to think of any older/vulnerable people (yes yes I know not all old people need looking after) living nearby and check to see if they are able to keep warm we can all do a bit to help.

Added a blogroll today

Bit fiddly to set up the styles until I realised which existing ones to copy from the sidebar styles already in the template - seems to work ok needed to define (I think) styles for <a> and <ul> and change
.blogrollmain br{display:list-item;}
then it worked

Not too sure about the background image - in terms of how it adds/detracts from the page - I like the toon - then I am biased cos Tom drew it - will leave it up for a bit anyway

Wonder how the Ainsdale Beach Kite meeting went yesterday....

PowerPoint makes you dumb

PowerPoint makes you dumb
This is something I had always assumed seeing as how many 'managers' use it, but maybe its the otherway round - you have to be dumb (ie a 'manager') to think powerpoint is the right tool to present complex information - specifically via the default 'bulleted list' presentation format that most seem to never get past.

Columbia AIB Report I haven't read it - have you? Page 191 I believe.

Someone who has - evidently.

Irving's Info Page

Irving's Info Page
A PC Help page recommended on Tourbus (see earlier posts - I suppose I ought to add to links list)...
... has on first viewing several tips which are provided without much background as to why (or why you might not want) to do things. Eg do you really want to automatically fix errors on scandisk - you might, you might not, but to decide you need to either try it or be told the ins and outs. I know a lot of people like to be told exactly what to do and then do it without further thought, but then lots of people give themselves stress and hassle by blindly doing what people tell them

London Free Press: News Section - Half-naked driver faces Net charge

I can't help wondering how this 'event' compares with the ridiculous mobile phone 'law' that comes into force today in the UK. It seems that todays drivers and the police weren't able to cope with the concept of 'dangerous driving' so had to have a noddy law which specifies almost down to which buttons you can or can't press when sat in a car. Needless to say it doesn't cover - as far as I know - lighting up a cigarette (or dropping it between your legs when lit - never happened to me officer), using a police walkie talkie (while driving in a high speed chase through red lights etc.), chatting to your girlfriend, having your dog bouncing around and licking you in the face, putting on your makeup, shaving or countless other activities observed on an almost daily basis - there's never a copper there when you want one is there? and probably it would be too much paperwork anyway?

The Register

The Register
Don't support hacking of this kind but surely the store (Lowe's - don't shop there with credit/debit cards - what other aspects of security do they not take care with) should also be sued by its customers for not securing the network properly. I mean what reason could there be for having such an open network in the first place?

Amazon reviews no longer honest and open? - NewsScan Daily Archives

Copied and pasted from the linked article:

MEASURING UP TO BAD REVIEWS
Anxious to read customer reviews on Clay Aiken's new album "Measure of a Man," I went to Amazon.com on the release date and found two ecstatic and two negative reviews. The next day I was about to post my review when I noticed the tie had been broken--Amazon had simply removed the negative reviews. What's up here?! Wait and watch. So on Thursday a new negative review was posted, but by late afternoon Amazon was on it and had deleted it too.
While Amazon broke new ground years ago by allowing customer to post honest feedback on every product, it appears that honest feedback from customers is not in Amazon.com's interest any more-- but, of course, they'll keep the ones that support sales. So now the original dot com, throws the dot bomb at its own customers. And I no longer trust any of their reviews. (Corl DeLuna)

Looks like you need to take the Amazon reviews with a pinch of salt from now on...

EightyOne Homepage

EightyOne HomepageCool ZX81 Emu:D

For those of a generation similar in age to no 1 son - who might not know what a ZX81 is/was, the ZX81 was one of the first genuine HOME computers available to the mass market. E.g. it was sold at W H Smith. I got mine (shared with da bro) for £50. Couldn't do much by comparison to a PC of today, but it was a computer and it was definitely accessible, probably more so than today's PCs.

How much is £50 in 1970's money worth today?

How do you get the keyboard shown in the EightyOne screenshots to show on the PC screen?

Trick of the Eye Kites

Trick of the Eye Kites Another on-line Kite shop, prices seem v low, but then you realise they are ex. VAT. Even then prices seem OK and they list all the size info you need dimensions and m^2

New kite arrived today

Just took delivery of new (to me) kite 10' Flexfoil - original design - had to go and fly it of course, not much wind and very variable, but when it flew it flew (big grin) - can't wait to try it at ainsdale or somewhere similar.

Gibraltar Farm - The prettiest campsite in Silverdale

The prettiest campsite in Silverdale - maybe when it's not spoilt by noisy scousers tho' it is the sort of site where you can do more or less what you want so of course some do with the 'sod everyone else - we're only having fun' attitude.

Having said that, if you get a quiet week/end then it is the best place in the the world - avoid bank holidays and cup final weekends - and you should be alright - the warden (new for 2003) should help keep things from getting too bad - also helps if its raining and blowing a gale - keeps the fairweather gazebo campers away.

Oh and its usually fairly windy, but this week it wasn't - until we're packing up to go home, when up pops a fresh little breeze. The Tolla flies OK, but is not as sharp as the HQ Symphony 1.4 - will have to try on same lines for a fair comparison - also need to find out more about the NASA wing - it definitely does not like any turbulence or changes of wind direction.

How to make inflatable bladders using polyethylene and a soldering iron

How to make inflatable bladders using polyethylene and a soldering iron

Hmmm, would be interesting to find out if anyone else other than Stelios has made bladders like this? Still if it works it means that making an inflatable wing is going to be more possible than before...

Aaaah a bit of wind :)

Flew the new kite (a purple Tolla 1.4 foil) today, not too bad considering the wind was a bit gusty and had to wait til it was going dark before the wind came.
Kite was not as sharp as the HQ 1.4, but this may be due to the longer slightly stretchier lines. Will try swapping them but needed longer lines to get some clean wind on the local field - we don't all live at St Annes you know!!

Kitelife Magazine - Issue 8: Mar/Apr 1999

www.kitelife.com

What a wonderful place the wibbly wobbly web is - search for the same stuff over and over, then u type something slightly different and you find a site u never seen before! The site also has a link to a list of kites that are easy enough for kids to make which means that i'm in with a chance ;)

Also found this place which sells bits for making your own kite Cochranes of Oxford at not too expensive, tho fabric from Point North (see below) would prolly be cheaper.

And another reasonably priced kites n fings site - Windseekers - not much in the way of materials tho

Here's another let's hope they're not robbers as their name suggests... Highwaymen...these have materials and spars at reasonable prices

I will update/post again if I get any experience of any of the shops eg via mail order or whatever

A word I didn't know until today. How useful it will be I don't know...

''just hold still Sir, while I fetch my tundish!''

''New tundishes for old...new tundishes for old...''

BTW, word of the decade is 'patress' - I know what it means (a sticky on-y sort thing, like what goes between a light switch and a wall, or the curve of an aircraft fuselage skin and the flat base of an aerial) but no official/dictionary definition found as yet Google search for same

Why can't you shoot burglars?

Good Thing - NOT

Carphone Warehouse - Trafford Park
Took dead Nokia in
Smooth efficient service - will let u know how it goes wrt whether they can actually fix the darn thing

Just phoned 03/08/03 - ''engineer not here - 'phone left on bench - don't know if its fixed or not''
The wonders of a modern 'communications' company - you got to laugh

Finally they said 'it's got traces of liquid on the inside - we can't fix it undew warranty if its water damage'

So claim off insurance - £25 xs bummer- new phone - but beware Nokia phones need to be pampered and kept away from all sources of moisture like sweat, air (unless it's 0% humidity), fruit, beer, dogs, cats, small boys, oh and rain (which we don't get in Manchester do we?). Come back Ericsson all is forgiven, but lower the price of your batteries to less than a cheap competitors phone.
